Cargo survey
A cargo survey is a comprehensive inspection and assessment of goods or cargo being transported or stored. Types of Cargo Surveys:
Pre-Shipment Survey: Conducted before the cargo is loaded onto a vessel or transported, this survey verifies the cargo’s condition, quantity, and packing. It ensures that the cargo meets the necessary standards and is suitable for shipping.
Loading Survey: This survey is performed during the loading process to confirm that the cargo is loaded correctly and safely onto the transport vehicle, such as a ship, truck, or airplane. It also ensures that the cargo is adequately secured to prevent damage during transit.
Discharge Survey: Conducted upon unloading the cargo at the destination, this survey verifies the condition and quantity of the cargo as it is received. Any damages or discrepancies are documented to assist with insurance claims or dispute resolutions.
Draft Survey: A draft survey is specific to maritime cargo and involves measuring the ship’s displacement to determine the cargo’s weight loaded or discharged. This is important for calculating freight charges and ensuring that the vessel operates within safe load limits.
Hold Inspection: This survey involves inspecting the cargo holds or storage area of a ship to assess their cleanliness and suitability for the intended cargo.
Condition Survey: Conducted at any stage of transportation or storage, this survey aims to determine the condition of the cargo and identify any damages or changes in quality that may have occurred during transit.
Damage Survey: In cases where the cargo has sustained damage during transportation, a survey is performed to assess the extent and nature of the damage, as well as to identify the potential cause and responsibility.
